 μ (2024)

From the catalogue of the Gwangju Biennale, 2024:

“μ (‘mu-’) is a two-channel video and sound installation titled after the mathematical coefficient for friction or touch. The work is exhibited on two screens, un-synchronized — therefore looping in always changing juxtapositions of sound and moving image. Shot at microscopic and quasi-microscopic scale entirely on the surface of a single 14- inch dub plate*, μ stages an encounter between a series of stylus-like objects and an elemental landscape in which the work of sound inscription is in process — that is, the transfer of sound into material. μ imagines the work of the stylus in this borderless, pigmented landscape as a kind of avatar in a space of quantum conditions in which sound, touch and movement entangle. The register of friction or touch, emblematizing a kind of erotics, is imagined at the origins of sound reproduction, conjuring a place where music’s proto-social and material potentials overlap and collide. . ."

µ was co-commissioned by the Gwangju Biennial, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud, Gwangju, South Korea, and EMPAC—Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York
